MAN Nutzfahrzeuge at the IAA 2008
Dear Sirs,
Environmental zones and driving bans, soaring diesel prices and increasing road tolls are currently having a serious impact on the transport industry. As a manufacturer of commercial vehicles and partner to our customers, we must find answers to these challenges. For this reason, our engineers work under intense pressure day after day to improve the efficiency of our transport solutions even further.
Good examples of such solutions are the new MAN D08 Common Rail and D20/D26 CR series of engines to meet the Euro 5 and/or EEV emissions standards. These so-called EGR engines are technical masterpieces: highly efficient and very powerful, they work extremely reliably and quietly. The other piece of good news for our customers is that these engines meet the stringent emissions standards without the need for costly after-treatment of exhaust gases and without additives. As regards these engines, which we presented to the public for the first time at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in September, one man would have been particularly proud of them: Rudolf Diesel. The inventor of the diesel engine would have celebrated his 150th birthday this year. Diesel developed the engine of the same name on the premises of and supported by Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, a forerunner of today's MAN Aktiengesellschaft. Since then, the name Diesel has been inseparably linked with the MAN company. Many creative and experienced MAN engineers have contributed towards this and have been able to set notable milestones repeatedly in the development of the diesel engine to this day.
The clean diesel engine will remain the main power unit in the commercial vehicle in the next 20 to 30 years; at the moment, no alternative which could surpass the diesel engine in terms of reliability, power/weight ratio, efficiency and packaging is in sight.
Our designers are currently working on high performance hybrid drives for city buses and distribution vehicles. In two years, the first MAN city bus with an efficient and economical hybrid engine will go into serial production. This bus’ fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will be reduced by up to 30 percent, proving that transport efficiency in MAN commercial vehicles is more than just a promise.
Our consistent approach to transport efficiency for the good of our customers and our environment also provides evidence of further innovations, which we will present at the IAA - and which you can witness and to some extent experience in advance here in Augsburg, the birthplace of the world's first diesel engine. Our experts look forward to intensive discussions with you!

Yours,
 Anton Weinmann
Chairman of the Executive Board of the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group
